What is a Network?

Understanding Networks: The Foundation of Your IT Dance

A network consists of two or more devices, computers, routers or switches, that are connected, either through cables or wirelessly through radio waves, to exchange files and share data.

A computer network is composed of hardware and software, and based on the geographic location, a different type of network will be used to connect users.

Types of Networks

Exploring Types of Networks: Your Business, Your Network Style

There are different types of networks available, depending on the size of the geographical area to be covered. Two very common types of networks include:

Local Area Network (LAN): A local-area network is a computer network that covers a small area. It is usually confined to a single room or single building. A LAN is connected to other LANs over any distance via ethernet, and has a high data transfer speed.

Wide Area Network (WAN): A wide-area network connects different smaller networks, including the local area networks (LANs). It usually covers a wide geographical area, and ensures that computers and users can communicate from different locations.

Network FAQs

How to get a better network signal?

  • Place your router or access point in a central location of the area the network is covering, to provide a stronger signal to all devices.
  • Use an ethernet connection instead of WiFi, by connecting your device to the router through a cable
  • Limit the devices connected to your router
  • Clear your cache, as broken cache can result in websites not loading or loading very slowly
  • Turn the router off and back on again, you would be surprised at how well this works sometimes!

How does a network work?

A network is composed of connected computers, routers or switches, called nodes. Each device on a network uses an Internet Protocol (IP) – a string of numbers identifying a device, which represents a set of rules defining how communications are sent and received between devices.
